Kingsgrove community plants 420 trees for the Queen’s Jubilee

St. Modwen proudly supported the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative at Kingsgrove on 23rd March 2022, planting 420 trees with help from the Lord Lieutenant, Town Mayor, local residents, councillors and 59 students from Wantage Primary Academy and Fitzwaryn School.

It was a great opportunity to involve the wider community in a project to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and preserving our local environment on a bright and sunny day. The Queen’s Green Canopy will create a green legacy that benefits people, the wildlife and the climate for the future, as well connecting communities across the country in 2022 who all contribute to the network of individual trees, avenues and woodlands to mark the Queen’s service.

Fitzwaryn Sixth Form said:

“We had a lovely time and we very much enjoyed listening to what it is like working in construction. We feel very lucky to be a part of the great event to mark the Platinum Jubilee.”

Councillor Major Jim Sibbald, Mayor of Wantage said:

“The planting of 420 native trees on the Kingsgrove Estate was a fitting tribute to Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and now form part of the Queen’s Green Canopy.  Surrounded by the ever-eager pupils of Wantage Primary Academy, and the fastidious Sixth Formers from Fitzwaryn School, I was delighted to escort Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Mrs Marjorie Glasgow BEM.  All participants were voracious in their planting.I thought that to complete the planting would be daunting, but all were up to the task.”

420 trees were planted at Kingsgrove in support of this event, including a diverse variety of species. While the plants are still in their infancy for now, we will soon begin to see the flourishing of field maple, alder, hazel, cornus, hawthorns, blackthorn, taxus yew, European spindle and willow. St. Modwen is planting trees at their sites across the country for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Zalman Fleischer, Residential Portfolio Manager for Kingsgrove said:

“Spending time with the community is the best part of my role, and I was especially heartened to see the sixth formers from Fitzwaryn School helping the younger pupils from Wantage Primary Academy.”

Greenery is very important to Kingsgrove, which has been displayed in the planting of 40,000 trees across the development already. A woodland walk has also been opened recently, and plans are in place to install allotments. A bulb planting event had also taken place in October 2021, and wildflower mixes will add a splash of colour across the estate.
